Megavalanche doctors certificate explained?
To compete in the Megavalanche you need to prove you are fit to do so, this can be done in the form of and signed doctors certificate, or if you are from the UK, a valid British Cycling membership is also ok.
There are three ways to do this;
You can download a copy of the certificate here to give to your doctor.
Quite often I’ve experienced doctors do not want to sign this form, if you are short of time you can actually get this form signed by doctors online.
From the organisers side of things, they just need to see a signed document or valid licence.
Can anyone enter the Megavanche?
The technical answer is ‘Yes’ but the real answer is ‘No’. Any rider CAN enter the Megavalanche, even children!
It is possible to enjoy the race at your own pace and navigate the descent slowly whilst taking in the trail. Not everyone in this race is a pro rider.
However you will be descending 2600mts with multiple terrain changes throughout the race. A good level of bike fitness will be needed as well as a competent level of bike skills to make this race enjoyable.
For more information as well as a look at the trails you can watch our Megavalanche trail guide video series here.
The Megavalanche route, what’s it like?
The Megavalanche route is an epic, high-altitude descent that starts at the summit of Pic Blanc (3,300m) and drops all the way down to Allemond, the lowest part of the Alpe d’Huez mountain area. The full route is 22km long, with a massive 2,600m of vertical descent.
The top section of the Megavalanche route tackles steep snow-covered ski pistes and long traverses. As you descend, the terrain shifts into fast, loose, rocky singletrack with optional technical sections (which can be walked if needed).
The mid-section throws in a long traverse and lung-busting uphill sprint, before dropping you into the final stretch. At this point in the route you’re still around halfway. From here on you’re riding flowy woodland trails, tight switchbacks, punchy climbs, and fast flats.
Expect it to take anywhere between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on conditions and your pace.
🎥 Want to see the Megavalanche route in action?
Check out our trail guide video below for an in-depth look at some of the trickier sections:
How many miles is the Megavalanche?
How many miles is the Megavalanche? – It’s just under 14 miles (or 22 kilometres) from start to finish. The trail is an official enduro route with 84 metres of climbing and a few miles of flat traverse sprint sections, so you’ll need more than bike skill and balls to get a solid result.
It’s a seriously epic descent from Pic Blanc at 3,330m all the way down to Allemond, dropping a huge 2,600m in elevation along the way.
Top-level riders can complete the race in around 40 minutes, while most experienced amateurs will finish in 50 minutes to 1 hour 15, depending on conditions, luck and fitness!

AMATEURS Group (Sunday): Riders finishing 71st to 94th.
