To get the most out of this trip, you need to be an intermediate to advanced rider.
While there are trails suitable for less experienced riders, especially on our guided days, you must be a capable, self-sufficient rider who is ready for technical days on the bike.
You certainly don’t need to be a pro athlete to join us, but having great bike handling skills and a solid base of fitness will unlock the absolute best of the region’s massive trail network.
The terrain across this trip can feature:
If those terrain types scare you or feel completely outside your current comfort zone, your options will be limited. You will find yourself sticking mainly to the mellow flow trails in Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes, meaning you’ll miss out on the incredible backcountry singletrack that makes this area so special.
If you are unsure about your skill level and want to chat about whether this trip is the right fit for you, get in touch with Jamie directly to talk it through.
Alpe d’Huez is an explorer’s paradise best known for the legendary Megavalanche mass start enduro race, but the wider network offers a massive maze of uncrowded singletrack and huge descents. Unlike a typical bike park, riding here is all about long, rugged alpine descents that span different mountainsides, often requiring mid-trail traverses and a bit of route planning.
As part of this trip Alpe d’ Huez plays host to 1 guided day & 3 self guided days
Les 2 Alpes offers a change of style from Alpe d’Huez with its massive bike park features and has some of the longest flow trails you’ll find, carved with huge, sculpted berms and jumps.
If bike park riding isn’t your thing, the legendary Mountain of Hell race track and a scattering of natural enduro lines are right there on the map waiting to be discovered.
Outside the main park lies some unique riding to say the least. The network shifts dramatically through distinct sectors: high-altitude scree slopes and steep single track through the trees.
Total Trail Distance: More than 138 km of trails across an immense 2,300m descent.
Trail Breakdown: 29 official trails ranging from wide flow trails to the infamous, brake-burning Black Garden down to Venosc.
As part of this trip Les 2 Alpes plays host to x1 guided away day & x1 self guided day.
La Grave is famous for its raw technical backcountry terrain with absolutely no manicured berms to speak of. It is a remote, high-alpine environment that splits into two completely different worlds: an extreme, lift-assisted expert zone up high, and a network of scenic, pedal-powered trails across the valley that are perfect for E-bikes.
As part of this trip, La Grave plays host to an optional extra guided away day which swaps out the self guided Les 2 Alpes day.
This is to be used as a guide only and may change to deliver the best possible riding experience

Is this the right trip for me?
If you’re looking for a quiet destination with little to no queues at the lift stations focused predominantly long descents made up of singletrack with a scattering of bike park flow trails then this trip is for you.
Riders of mixed abilities join solo or in groups to ride great trails. The terrain is rocky and technical, often in high alpine, remote locations. You need good trail awareness and be comfortable handling basic bike issues on the hill. Although the trails are marked on a map it isn’t a bike park holiday. The trails are partly manicured but also very natural some with exposure in places.
The trails vary in gradient from mellow to very steep. If you chose the guided option then the guide will tailor each day to best suit the group.
It’s a social, group based holiday and a way to meet like minded riders.
You don’t need to be a pro, but this also isn’t a first ride trip for ameteurs.
Away day shuttles
Each away day gives riders a chance to explore a vast trail network.
As part of your holiday shuttles for riders and bikes will be transport via a minibus at a pre set departure and pick up location.
It is the responsibility of each rider to make sure they are ready at the pick up zone at the correct time otherwise the transfer may depart without them.
Riders load and secure their own bikes. Bikes remain the rider’s responsibility.
Guided rides
The guiding included with this holiday is based on one day in Alpe d Huez and one day in Les 2 Alpes.
Each days guiding will be hosted by a local to the area to ensure the best possible day for each group.
Each day will be tailored to the group on the day.
If you wish to opt in to the guided away to day La Grave, this is an optional extra which swaps out the self guided day in Les 2 Alpes.
Any rider who opts into the La Grave day must do their own due diligence and be fully aware of the advanced difficulty level of the trails.
If you’re unsure whether this trip is right for you, or you’d like to request weeks with more or less experienced riders, contact us to discuss before booking.
What spares should I bring?
Tubeless tyres with inserts are considered highly recommended.
Bring a tubeless repair kit and a spare inner tube.
Spare brake pads.
A rear derailleur hanger specific to your bike.
Energy bars for mid ride fuel.
There are bikes shops in each location for items if required although they are very expensive.
What is the best bike for this holiday?
A burly enduro ebike would be the perfect weapon for this trip.
Ebikes are not essecial but do open up some of the bigger loops in the area which may include an element of traverse or climbing.
Alpe d’ Huez is known for its quality enduro riding which means you have access to 2000 + metres of descent but the trails may have 200 Mts of incline on the way down.
Ebikes in these areas are not essential but preferred in my opinion.
At a bare minimum you need a hefty trail bike with descent 4 pot brake system, preferably 160mm of travel or more.
Downhill bikes maybe surplus to requirements but would be beneficial if focusing on the bike park in Les 2 Alpes.
What protection do I need for this trip?
The trails can be high speed and rocky. Wear appropriate gear.
Full-face helmet and goggles are strongly recommended.
Body armour recommended.
Knee and elbow pads, plus gloves.
Proper riding shoes.
Also bring hydration, snacks, and any personal spares.
Can I hire a bike?
Yes. Bike hire is possible from a few local shops in Alpe d’ Huez.
Expect to pay around €100 per day
Local recommended hire shops are Rocky Sports or Alpesports.
How long are the trails on this trip?
The locations on this trip test riders endurance and offer huge descents often on one singular trail. Think more about doing one long ride to get to your next trail apposed to riding downhill laps as you would in Morzine.
For example, the Megavalanche trail is open to ride all summer which has over 2600 mts of descent and could take you half a day to ride!
