The Megavalanche FAQ

Since 1995, each year, thousands of riders drop in from the famous “Pic Blanc glacier” in Alpe d’Huez!  Racers start 3330 meters high, and descend to the finish line in Allemont 2600 meters below.

This ENDURO MASS-START descent makes it the longest and craziest race in the world!

The event entry cost varies year to year. Typically a 7 day lift pass with race entry will set you back around 150 Euros.

You also have the option to add insurance to your race entry for around 9 Euros per day.

*Your event entry is NOT included as part of the holiday package*

The nearest airport is Grenoble, however flights can be limited during the summer.  The biggest nearest airports are Geneva and Lyon. It’s possible to rent a car or book a transfer to Alpe d’Huez.

We offer Geneva return Transfers for £75 each way. Please note this will be a limited service and you MUST read all information about our transfers before booking your flights.

Please get in contact if you’d like to use our transfer service.

The total distance of Megavalanche is 22 kilometres, the best riders finish the race in about 40 minutes whereas mere mortals are around the 50min-1hr 15 mark. The whole descent is 2,610 m from Pic Blanc, which stands at a massive 3,330 metres!

The technical answer is ‘Yes’ but the real answer is ‘No’. Any rider can enter the event including children. However you will be descending 2600mts with multiple terrain changes throughout the race. A good level of bike fitness will be needed as well as a competent level of bike skills to make this race enjoyable.

It is possible to enjoy the race at your own pace and navigate the descent slowly whilst taking in the trail. Not everyone in this race is a pro rider.

Everybody qualifies for the race after the seeding runs. You will all race from the glacier, whether Saturday OR Sunday, in the level group in which you qualified for on Friday.

For example;
MEGAVALANCHE group (Sunday) : the 350 best riders (from 1st to 35th of each qualification wave).
CHALLENGERS group (Saturday) : from 36th to 70th of each qualification wave.
AMATEURS group (Sunday) : from 71st to 94th of each qualification wave.
AFFINITY group (Saturday, individual start) : from the 95th to 130th of each qualification wave.
Ladies and e-bikes have their specific start saturday morning.

The Megavalanche has options for all ages and skill levels.  They offer separate races for e-bikers, women and kids, along with 3 different starts for amateurs, challengers and The main Megavalanche race.  Everyone races on the same track (kid’s start lower down), so as long as you can get through the technical sections, you can find the right group for you!  Your group will be determined from your qualifying race result.

To compete in the Megavalanche you need to prove you are fit to do so, this can be done in the form of and signed doctors certificate, or if you are from the UK, a valid British Cycling membership is also ok.

There are three ways to do this;

  1. You can upload your signed doctors certificate directly to the event organisers when you sign up for the event.
  2. You can bring your doctor’s certificate with you when you sign on at the event.
  3. Bring your valid British Cycling card with you when you sign on at the event.

You can download a copy of the certificate here to give to your doctor.

Quite often I’ve experienced doctors do not want to sign this form, if you are short of time you can actually get this form signed by doctors online.

From the organisers side of things, they just want to see a signed document or valid licence.

Airport Transfer Details

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE TRANSFER EACH WAY!

TO USE OUR GENEVA TRANSFER SERVICES YOUR FLIGHT MUST ARRIVE BEFORE 11AM ON THE START DATE OF THE TRIP & DEPART AFTER 2PM THE DAY OF DEPARTURE.

Please book your arrival day flights to arrive of the morning before 11am as the transfer will aim to leave at around 12pm from Geneva. Your departure day flights need to depart from afternoon from Geneva. The transfer will leave the chalet at around 9.30AM.

Feel free to book an earlier arrival day flight or a later departure day flight if it makes more sense, but you may have to wait at the airport to connect with your transfer or return flight.

The Transfers will consist of a shared transport coach with our other chalets in. Provided that there are no flight delays we will keep waiting times to a minimum*.

Our transfer services are not available under any other conditions and it is your responsibility that all your group members are aware of these conditions.

* For delayed flights, the maximum we can wait is up to half an hour after the scheduled departure time in order to avoid compromising driver hours regulations. If your flight is delayed by more than this we will endeavour to arrange an alternative. You will have to pay for this initially but you will normally be able to reclaim this on your travel insurance.
**The return departure time will sometimes change due to advice from the transfer company about traffic and other issues. Expect to depart between 8am – 9.30am.

Prepare for your Megavalanche experience

Explore the three stages of the Megavalanche

  • The Snow Stage

Take the gondola up to 3300 mts for the beginning of the race where the top few hundred meters of descent are covered in snow! It’s like riding nothing else you’ve experienced before. It rewards the riders who are lucky enough to keep it upright as well as those brave enough to stay off the brakes and commit! The top section is fast, hectic and tough on the lungs due to the elevation!

  • The Rock Stage

The top-mid section of the race is all about line choice and preserving your bike and energy whilst holding position. It’s fast, loose and rocky with a few technical sections. Don’t forget to save some beans for the long traverse and uphill sprints!

  • The Climb

This race is not all about how fast you can descend. A huge part of the Megavalanche is won and lost on the brutal punchy climbs. Expect your fitness to be pushed to the limit as you dig deep into the pain cave sprinting up climbs!

  • The Forest Stage

After the long uphill sprint you have chance to take a breather as the the long descent into the trees begins. The lower section of the race track has a more familiar feel as the forest delivers some fast corners, tight steeper switchbacks and off cambers.
